St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church – Northfield Twp. was established in 1869 and had its first permanent worship facility in 1874. By God’s grace, St. John’s has been a place where Christians have had the wonderful opportunity to gather for generations. See St. John’s History for more detail.
It is at St. John’s that Christians have gathered to hear the Word of The Lord proclaimed in its truth and purity, and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper administered faithfully.
As Christians gathering together for generations, the faces and names have changed, but the message has not. The clear and simple message of salvation in Christ Jesus alone as recorded in the Holy Bible, has by God’s grace remained the same. We have that simple message given to us in the familiar Bible passage that generations of Christians have put to memory long before St. John’s in Northfield Twp existed.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
In Scripture we learn that because of the sinful nature which has been passed on from Adam and Eve through all generations, all mankind was bound for hell. Yet God, in Christ Jesus, came to earth and saved us from the certain despair of hell and has given us the gift of eternal life in heaven through Christ Jesus our Savior, as Scripture assures us.
“At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. BUT when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit Whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:3-7)
We pray that the Lord would continue to sustain St. John’s - for us, for our children - and for generations to come, until the Lord Jesus comes again with all His Holy Ones to take us and all believers to our heavenly home.
What a blessing that in Christ we can look forward to the wonderful reunion of all believers in heaven, generations past, present and future.
“Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. … Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. …. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:1, 14 & 17)
